Nigeria will start producing HIV test kits and anti-retroviral drugs domestically before the end of 2025, according to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

Director-General Temitope Ilori announced the initiative during the launch of a PMTCT and paediatric ART acceleration committee in Ilorin. She emphasized that the move is part of broader efforts to eliminate AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Ilori noted that while Nigeria continues to battle HIV—with nearly 140,000 children under 14 living with the virus—the current coverage for paediatric treatment remains below target levels. To address these challenges, the government is integrating HIV services into the national health system, reducing reliance on donor funding and ensuring sustainable, locally driven healthcare solutions.

The initiative comes amid renewed calls for improved HIV service delivery and a stronger, more self-reliant response to the epidemic in Nigeria.
