Nigeria Records 1,154 Lassa Fever Cases, 190 Deaths in 2024 – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 1,154 confirmed Lassa fever cases and 190 deaths in 2024. Speaking in Abuja, NCDC Director General Dr. Jide Idris disclosed that 9,492 suspected cases were documented this year, with Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi leading in confirmed cases.

He highlighted an alarming surge in cases over the past month, attributing it to enhanced surveillance. Dr. Idris warned about heightened risks during the festive season and emphasized the importance of food safety and targeted interventions in endemic areas.

The NCDC has activated emergency measures, distributing medical supplies nationwide, upgrading testing labs, and coordinating response efforts through its Emergency Operations Centre.

Lassa fever, caused by the Lassa virus, spreads through contact with infected rats, contaminated food or surfaces, and human-to-human transmission. The public is urged to adopt preventive measures to curb the disease’s spread.
