A new terror group known as Lakurawa has attacked Mera, a community in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing 15 people and rustling more than 100 cows.

Confirming the incident, Alhaji Bashir Isah Mera (Yariman Mera) explained that the assailants struck just as residents were preparing for the Jumat prayer, seizing the cattle. Locals mobilized in an attempt to reclaim the stolen livestock, resulting in a violent confrontation that left 15 residents and two members of the group dead.

According to Mera, the Lakurawas have been operating from hideouts in the Sokoto forests. Initially, they only seized livestock and demanded “Zakat” payments but this escalated to this deadly attack, their first fatal assault on the community.

Governor Nasir Idris expressed concern over the incident, instructing the deployment of soldiers to stabilize the area. The Commanding Officer of Dukku Barracks and other top security personnel have been mobilized for this purpose.

Kebbi’s Deputy Governor, Senator Abubakar Umar Tafida, and the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, visited the community to offer condolences and assure residents of the government’s commitment to safeguarding them against further violence.

Attempts to reach the Kebbi State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
