Armed personnel from the Ikeja Air Force Base stormed Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) on Thursday, assaulting staff and a journalist over a power disconnection dispute.
The base had been without electricity for two weeks due to unpaid bills. Despite an agreement for a ₦60 million monthly payment, the military claimed the blackout was affecting security.
During the attack, staff were beaten, equipment was damaged, and engineers were taken to restore power. PUNCHjournalist Dare Olawin, who was covering an event nearby, was also assaulted, with his phone seized.
“I was seriously beaten. They took my phone and power bank and threatened to shoot me if I said anything,” Olawin said.
IKEDC has yet to respond to the incident.
