Malnutrition Crisis Looms in Kano, MSF Treats Thousands

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) says it treated 43,564 malnourished children in Kano State in 2024 and has already seen 5,076 new cases between January and April 2025 — ahead of the usual peak period.

MSF’s medical lead in Kano, Dr Anthony Mbarga, raised concern over rising cases and possible donor cuts that could affect their work, especially in northern Nigeria.

He said the group now runs five centres across the state, including a newly opened inpatient facility at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, and has increased bed capacity from 55 to 178.
