Lassa fever has caused 127 deaths between January and April 2025, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). The disease has spread across 18 states, with a case fatality rate of 18.8%, slightly higher than the 18.5% reported for the same period last year.
The NCDC report reveals that Ondo, Bauchi, and Edo states account for 71% of all confirmed cases, with Ondo having the highest number at 30%. Other states such as Taraba, Ebonyi, and Gombe have also recorded cases, but no new healthcare workers were affected this week.
The majority of those affected are between 21 and 30 years old. Despite a slight increase in confirmed cases this year, the NCDC has activated the National Lassa Fever Multi-partner, Multi-sectoral Incident Management System (IMS) to coordinate response efforts across the country.
The NCDC continues to monitor the situation as it works with local health authorities to curb the spread of the disease.
