At least 12 inmates have escaped from the Federal Correctional Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State.
The jailbreak occurred in the early hours of Monday. According to the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, the inmates broke out through the tower.
Fanwo said the state government is working with security agencies to investigate the escape and rearrest the fugitives.
Governor Usman Ododo has directed security operatives to prevent future breaches. Authorities have urged residents to report any suspicious individuals, warning that anyone caught harbouring an escapee will face consequences.
This is not the first jailbreak in Kogi. In 2014, 144 prisoners escaped from the same facility.
