The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the recapture of five out of the 12 inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State.

In a statement on Monday, NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar said the jailbreak occurred in the early hours of March 24 when some Awaiting Trial Inmates (ATIs) tampered with padlocks, leading to their escape.

Following the incident, Acting Controller-General of NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, in collaboration with security agencies, swiftly deployed personnel to restore order and track down the fugitives.

“As of now, five fleeing inmates have been recaptured, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the rest,” Umar stated, adding that a full investigation and security audit are underway to prevent future breaches.

The NCoS urged the public to report any suspicious activities and assured Nigerians that security measures across custodial facilities are being reinforced.
