Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK’s Conservative Party and a Nigerian-born politician, has once again voiced strong criticism of Nigeria, drawing parallels between the governance challenges of her birth country and the reforms she believes are necessary for the United Kingdom.

Speaking at an event organized by Onward, a British think tank focused on economic and social issues, Badenoch emphasized the urgency of reforming the UK’s systems to avoid pitfalls she associates with Nigeria.

Highlighting her personal experience, Badenoch said, “I know what it is like to have something and then to lose it. I don’t want Britain to lose what it has.” She added, “I grew up in a poor country and watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer, despite working harder and harder as their money disappeared with inflation.”

Reflecting on her upbringing in Nigeria, Badenoch shared how her family’s financial situation deteriorated under what she described as poor governance. “I have lived with the consequences of terrible governments that destroy lives, and I never, ever want it to happen here,” she stated.

Badenoch, who returned to the UK at the age of 16 with what she described as her father’s last £100, said her experiences shaped her political outlook. “The Conservative Party is the right group to fix Britain. Building trust is crucial, and we cannot afford to let our systems falter,” she asserted.

Her remarks come after similar comments she made late last year, which drew significant attention and criticism for their harsh tone. However, Badenoch insists that her intent is to highlight the importance of sound governance and economic stability.
