The governments of Kebbi and Kano States have revealed that they consulted relevant stakeholders, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), before deciding to close schools for the Ramadan fast.
Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, disclosed to a reporter from The Punch newspaper that religious leaders, including the leadership of CAN and representatives from the Islamic community, were consulted during the formulation of the policy.Idris stated: “We are not reversing the decision. The closure of schools was the result of meetings with all relevant stakeholders, including religious leaders, parents, and others.”
He added, “The leadership of CAN and the Muslim community were fully involved before the decision was reached.”
Balarabe Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Education, mentioned an expanded stakeholders meeting at the federal level in which the Christian Association of Nigeria was fully represented.
Kiru also reaffirmed the stance of the state government, stating that there would be no reversal of the policy.”There is no way we can reverse the directive. There is no going back on the decision that was made with the knowledge and agreement of all stakeholders and the State Executive Council,” Kiru added.
