Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has suspended Dr Nasiru Abubakar Kigo, Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Office, over controversial claims on homosexuality and lesbianism in Kebbi and Sokoto.
During a Ramadan lecture in Birnin Kebbi, Kigo alleged that Kebbi has over 19,000 lesbians and nearly 16,000 homosexuals, many of whom, he claimed, are married and registered with ID cards.
His remarks sparked outrage, prompting the state government to describe the claims as “defamatory, misleading and unacceptable.”
A statement by the governor’s adviser on religious affairs, Imrana Ibn Usman, said the claims misrepresented Islam and the values of the Sokoto Caliphate. Kigo remains suspended pending investigation.
