The Nigerian Cancer Society has warned that a mass exodus of health workers has forced one oncologist to manage care for 1,800 cancer patients—far above the ideal 1:250 ratio.
NCS President Prof. Abidemi Emmanuel Omonisi attributed the shortage to poor pay, inadequate facilities, insecurity, and underfunding in the health sector.
He urged the government to address these issues and invest in better cancer care infrastructure.
The society has also launched a Youth Coalition Against Cancer to engage young Nigerians in the fight against the disease.
Health experts emphasize that boosting HPV vaccinations is critical to curbing rising cervical cancer rates.
