The Israeli military has killed at least 40 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, despite a ceasefire agreement announced recently.

According to Al Jazeera, Israeli forces intensified their attacks following the announcement of the truce, which has yet to take full effect. The killings coincided with the Israeli cabinet’s preparations to vote on the agreement.

A Hamas official, Izzat al-Risheq, stated that the ceasefire deal, brokered in Doha, Qatar, satisfies all the group’s demands. These include the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the return of displaced residents to their homes, and a permanent cessation of hostilities.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude to U.S. President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump for their support in facilitating the agreement, which he described as an effort to ease “the suffering of dozens of hostages and their families.”

The conflict in Gaza has claimed the lives of at least 46,707 Palestinians and left 110,265 wounded since the war began on October 7, 2023.
