A hippopotamus displaced by floods near Kiri Dam has killed one person in Banjiram, Guyuk Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Guyuk LGA Chairman, Shalom Kassa, said the animal has been roaming farmlands and residential areas, destroying crops and putting lives at risk. He explained that flooding has forced the hippos out of their natural habitat and into nearby communities.
Residents say they feel helpless, as wildlife laws prohibit harming the animals. Kassa, along with Shelleng LGA Chairman Abubakar Abba and local traditional leaders, has appealed to the government and wildlife authorities for urgent action.
