Suspected gunmen reportedly killed, at least, two people and abducted another one at Okija community in Ihiala local government area of Anambra state on Sunday night.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 9pm and has since created heavy tension and panic amongst residents in the area.
One of the deceased is reported to be popular lawyer and secretary general of Okija progressive union, Mr. Peter Awa and the other was given as Mr. Izuchukwu Igwenagha, popularly known in the area as (Onwa)
The third victim, yet to be identified, one who was abducted, was allegedly whisked away by the gunmen. Early speculations suggest the incident was sparked by a recent tussle over a parcel of land.
The unfortunate incident is threatening to leave a long and sad taste on the residents as the community had been generally considered to be the most peaceful in the area. Many people, reports say, choose the community to host social events due to the guarantee of security and very low crime rates but all that has been thrown into jeopardy giving recent events.
An earlier attempt had reportedly been made to abduct the spouse of one of the victims but that was quickly thwarted, a testament to the existing security architecture.
Anambra police public relations officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, is yet to issue a statement on the incident.
