The Federal Government, in collaboration with the World Bank, has earmarked $600 million for the next phase of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) to enhance agricultural productivity and boost rural economies.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi, disclosed that the World Bank will contribute $500 million, while federal and state governments will provide a $100 million counterpart fund.
Dr. Abdullahi explained that RAAMP aims to address critical gaps in rural infrastructure, supporting agricultural marketing, food security, and job creation. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to eradicate poverty, promote inclusivity, and stimulate economic growth.
“Most of Nigeria’s population resides in rural areas where agriculture forms over 70% of economic activities. Unfortunately, inadequate road networks hinder farmers’ ability to market their produce and sustain livelihoods,” he said.
The National Coordinator of RAAMP, Aminu Mohammed, further highlighted that the project would improve rural road connectivity, establish economic corridors, and support agro-industrial clusters, fostering sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
The scale-up phase of RAAMP will cover 19 states, focusing on infrastructure that directly impacts rural communities, where over 70% of Nigerians reside.
