The Federal Government has announced plans to build affordable smart homes using bamboo for low and medium income earners across the country.
The initiative, led by the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), aims to reduce housing costs while promoting eco-friendly construction. Officials say bamboo, combined with other tested technologies, offers a sustainable way to meet Nigeria’s rising housing demand.
Speaking at a one-day workshop in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye—represented by Mrs. Benadette Oguche—said the use of bamboo will support climate goals and provide durable, comfortable housing.
She added that while there are challenges like the high initial cost and bamboo supply issues, the government is optimistic the project will help bridge the housing gap responsibly.
