Over 5,000 Nigerian women are stranded in Iraq after travelling there for caregiving jobs, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has reported.

NiDCOM Chairman, Hon. (Mrs.) Abike Dabiri-Erewa, shared the distressing news during a seminar in Lagos on Tuesday. Many of the women, lured by promises of work, have become victims of irregular migration. Dabiri-Erewa recounted a case where a woman sent to Iraq by her husband died mysteriously while working as a caregiver.

“There are about 5,000 women stranded in Iraq,” Dabiri-Erewa said, stressing the importance of finding opportunities within Nigeria instead of risking lives abroad.

The seminar, aimed at promoting diaspora investments, highlighted Nigeria’s potential in sectors like real estate and agriculture. Dr. Godfrey Ajayi Sunday of G-Consulting announced plans to mobilize over $100 million for investments from the diaspora.
