The Federal Government has temporarily shut down the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for emergency runway repairs.
The closure follows Air Peace’s suspension of flights to the airport, citing safety concerns due to the deteriorating runway.
FAAN confirmed that a section of the runway had ruptured and announced that repairs will take place from April 22 to May 6. During this time, no flights will land or take off.
Passengers have been advised to use nearby airports, including Asaba. FAAN apologised for the short notice and urged public understanding.
The airport had undergone major repairs in 2019 but has once again fallen into disrepair, raising safety issues for airlines and passengers.
