The Federal Government has admitted that its 2009 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) remains the last valid deal between both sides.

This comes after Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, earlier claimed no agreement existed, a remark that sparked criticism from the union.

In a statement on Friday, the ministry explained that while fresh efforts were made—such as the 2021 Nimi Briggs draft—none of them were signed.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, faulted government’s poor record-keeping, which he said often hinders negotiations. The union also urged the government to extend the seven-year licensing period for private universities to polytechnics and colleges of education.
