Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have raised concerns that the soaring prices of essential body care products could affect personal hygiene standards.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, several residents highlighted that items like deodorants and antiperspirants once considered basic necessities, are now becoming unaffordable for many.

Miss Juliet John, a resident of Nyanya, expressed her dismay at the sharp increase in prices. “The surge in skincare product prices is alarming. Deodorants that used to cost between N500 and N600 are now selling for over N2,000. We’re not even talking about luxury perfumes—just roll-on deodorants and body sprays that help prevent body odour. The prices have skyrocketed to the point that it’s hard for someone like me, who is trying to maintain hygiene, to keep up,” she explained.

She further added that for individuals with limited income, personal hygiene products may now be considered luxuries rather than everyday essentials.

In contrast, Mr. David Agwu, a businessman in the FCT, stated that despite the rising costs, he would continue to use his preferred hygiene products. He suggested that people could opt for more affordable alternatives, such as mini oil perfumes under N1,000 or budget-friendly antiperspirants, to mitigate the financial strain. According to him, these alternatives not only prevent body odour but also boost confidence.

Dr. Nnenna Solomon, a general physician, emphasized that while deodorants and antiperspirants are important, maintaining proper hygiene habits is paramount. “Though deodorants and perfumes are helpful, paying attention to cleaning specific body parts during bathing is key. Proper bathing habits and regular physical exercise are the most effective ways to manage body odour,” she advised.
