A middle-aged farmer, Baba Alhassan, suffered a dramatic collapse after discovering that hoodlums had stolen his beniseed, valued at N440,000, in Ashara, a community in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to a resident, Saidu Ibrahim, the theft occurred last Thursday night when the assailants broke into Alhassan’s storage facility under the cover of darkness. They made away with two bags of beniseed along with some other harvested produce.
“The incident happened overnight while everyone was asleep. The farmer only discovered the theft the next morning when he went to retrieve the beniseed to take to the Kwali market for sale. Upon realizing the loss, he collapsed on the spot,” Ibrahim recounted.
The neighbours quickly came to Alhassan’s aid, pouring water on him until he regained consciousness.
Explaining the gravity of the loss, Ibrahim noted, “The man collapsed because a bag of beniseed currently sells for between N250,000 and N260,000 in the market. He had planned to use the proceeds from selling the two bags to pay for his child’s university admission fees.”
The emotional toll of the theft has resonated across the community, with many expressing shock over the brazenness of the crime and the devastating impact on the farmer’s livelihood.
As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Adeh Josephine, has not confirmed the incident.
