The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a stern warning to airport security personnel against soliciting bribes or tips from passengers. During a meeting with security agency heads at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, condemned the unpatriotic practices that have sparked numerous complaints from passengers, the Minister of Aviation, and the Presidency.

She launched “Operation AirClean” to address harassment at screening points, emphasizing the use of technology to reduce manual searches. Mrs. Kuku stated that the misconduct tarnishes Nigeria’s image and discourages foreign investment, especially at Lagos Airport, a key entry point for visitors.

The MD warned of stiff penalties for any officer caught demanding kickbacks, adding that undercover “mystery shoppers” equipped with body cameras would monitor staff performance. She also highlighted the need for inter-agency collaboration and accountability, urging leaders to ensure their officers adhere to proper conduct.

Representatives of multiple security and paramilitary agencies, including the Nigerian Immigration Services, NDLEA, Police, and Customs, pledged to improve oversight and service delivery. Mobile courts will also be established to expedite the prosecution of offenders.
