Residents of Maiduguri were thrown into panic late Wednesday after loud explosions and flashes lit up the sky around Giwa Barracks.
People in nearby areas like Polo, Fori, GRA, and UNIMAID feared it was an attack. But police later confirmed the blasts were from a fire outbreak at the army barracks’ ammunition store.
The Borno State Police Command said the fire caused some munitions to explode. They linked the incident to the intense heat in the city and assured that the situation is under control.
The Borno Fire Service also confirmed the fire was put out by a joint team from the army, federal, and state fire services. They urged residents to stay calm, warning that some loud bangs may still occur.
