Denmark international Christian Eriksen suffered a scare during his country’s friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday.
The 34-year-old midfielder went to the ground in the 65th minute, prompting officials to call off the match with Denmark leading 2-1. Despite the concern, Eriksen was able to walk off the pitch unassisted.
The incident drew comparisons with Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s opening match against Finland at Euro 2020, when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the field before being successfully resuscitated and later making a full recovery.
Following Sunday’s incident, Eriksen received treatment on the pitch before being transferred to hospital for further evaluation, according to Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should,” Boesen said.
“He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were able to communicate with him immediately.
“He will undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We remain in close contact with him and the doctors treating him.”
Eriksen returned to professional football after an eight-month rehabilitation period following his Euro 2020 collapse and had a cardiac device implanted to monitor and regulate his heart rhythm.
He has since resumed his career at the highest level and has earned more than 100 caps for Denmark.
