The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for tougher punishment for men who beat their wives, saying no good Muslim does so.
Speaking at his palace, Sanusi condemned rising cases of gender-based violence and urged Islamic leaders to lead efforts in ending the trend.
He stressed that Islam upholds the dignity of women and warned traditional leaders under his emirate that those caught abusing their wives could lose their titles.
