Billionaire Elon Musk has stepped down from his position in Donald Trump’s administration, ending his 130-day stint as a Special Government Employee.

Announcing his exit on X, Musk thanked Trump and said his “Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)” mission would continue. His role focused on cutting waste and downsizing the federal workforce.

A White House official confirmed the move, saying Musk’s offboarding would begin immediately. Sources say Musk didn’t speak directly with Trump before resigning, and the decision was handled at senior staff level.

Musk had recently criticised Trump’s tax plans and expressed frustration with Washington’s bureaucracy. He also clashed with officials over trade and AI deals, signalling a growing disinterest in politics.

Despite his departure, both Musk and the Trump camp say DOGE’s reforms will go on.
