Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
El-Rufai confirmed his decision in a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday, after a leaked resignation letter had circulated earlier in the day. His spokesman, Muyiwa Adekeye, declined to comment at first, but an ally who served in his administration confirmed the development.
In his resignation letter, El-Rufai expressed disappointment with the APC’s current leadership, stating that the party had strayed from its founding principles. He emphasized that despite his contributions to the party’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, he could no longer align with its direction.
El-Rufai added that he would work within the SDP to unite opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections, urging his supporters to join him in the new political movement.
