The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to growing public concern over the detention of social media activist Martins Innocent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, clarified on Tuesday that VDM was arrested for allegedly ignoring multiple invitations from the commission. These were in response to various petitions accusing him of financial crimes.
Oyewale explained that VDM was invited to respond to the allegations but failed to appear despite several attempts by the EFCC to reach him. While VDM had been granted administrative bail, Oyewale stated that he would be charged once investigations are completed.
The EFCC denied that the arrest was linked to VDM’s criticisms of the commission, emphasizing that the arrest was based solely on the need to investigate serious financial allegations against him.
The commission urged Nigerians to allow it to carry out its investigation without interference.
