The former President of the United States and current candidate for the office, Donald J. Trump, has announced the selection of Ohio Senator, J D Vance as his pick for vice president. Trump made the announcement on social media on Monday evening as the convention where he is officially nominated by his party kicks off in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio. J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association. J.D.’s book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond…” he wrote on Truth Social.
The choice of JD Vance raised eyebrows as the senator was a fierce critic of Trump during his first run for office. Vance famously called Trump “reprehensible”, “cultural heroine”, “America’s Hitler”, amongst others but observers say the choice of Vance may be a signal to a wing of the party in rural America and to support Trump’s earlier assertion he wants someone who can step in “that can be good just in case, that horrible just in case.”
Other contenders for the spot included Senators Marco Rubio and Tim Scott, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy who contested for the primary ticket alongside Trump and Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota.
