Media Trust Group, the parent company of Daily Trust and Trust TV, showcased its excellence at the 2023 Nigerian Media Merit Awards (NMMA), winning four prestigious accolades.

Lami Sadiq, a senior reporter at Daily Trust, claimed two awards: the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Prize for Culture and Tradition Reporter of the Year for her compelling story, “Concerns rise over marry-your-rapist practices in Nigeria,” and the Alex Ibru Prize for Investigative Reporter of the Year with her report “Inside Abuja’s kidney market where the rich prey on the poor.”

Another standout winner was Daily Trust journalist Afeez Hanafi, who secured the IGI Prize for Insurance Reporter of the Year for his impactful report, “Poor insurance culture compounds farmers’ anguish amid poverty.”

On the broadcast front, Trust TV’s Aisha Salihu won the Cadbury Nigeria PLC Prize for Television Reporter of the Year with her feature titled “Caesarean section: Mixed reactions trail rising popularity of delivery procedure.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented at the ceremony by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, lauded the media for their resilience and critical role in shaping Nigeria’s democracy. He emphasized the government’s commitment to press freedom and urged media professionals to support tax reforms designed to enhance national prosperity.

Chairman of NMMA, Dayo Duyile, reaffirmed the award’s mission to promote excellence in journalism, particularly among younger practitioners. He rejected claims that journalism standards had declined, arguing instead that reduced media investment has impacted the industry.
