The Nigeria Customs Service’s Western Marine Command has apprehended three individuals smuggling 788 kilograms of cannabis sativa through the creeks in Badagry, Lagos. The suspects and the seized illicit substances have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye, the Area Controller of the Western Marine Command, disclosed that the arrests were the result of extensive surveillance along Lagos waterways. The operation culminated in late November 2024, when Customs officers intercepted boats carrying the contraband near Ijegun waterfront, Bar Beach, and Ekare Beach Front.
Bamisaiye detailed the seizures, stating, “During searches, officers recovered 1,658 loaves of cannabis sativa weighing 788 kilograms across three separate operations, leading to the arrest of three suspects.”
The operation aligns with Section 233 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, which mandates the prevention of illicit trade. While handing over the suspects and the cannabis to NDLEA, Bamisaiye reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s waterways against illegal activities.
