Court Dismisses Defamation Case Against Dele Farotimi

The Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti has struck out a defamation case filed against human rights lawyer Dele Farotimiby the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The case stemmed from allegations by Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), founder of Afe Babalola University, who claimed that Farotimi defamed him in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

However, Babalola later announced his decision to forgive Farotimi and withdraw the case, following interventions by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other traditional rulers.

During Wednesday’s court session, prosecuting counsel Samson Osobu informed the court of a notice of discontinuance filed under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, stating that the complainant no longer wished to pursue the case.

Defence counsel A. Olumide Fusika (SAN) accepted the withdrawal, and Justice Babs Kuewumi subsequently struck out the suit.
