Canada to Recognise Palestinian State at UN by September

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that his country will formally recognise Palestine as a sovereign state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Carney said the move aligns with Canada’s long-standing support for a two-state solution, noting that recent developments have made a negotiated peace with Israel increasingly unlikely.

“Canada intends to recognise the State of Palestine,” he said, adding that the decision is linked to key reforms promised by the Palestinian Authority. These include a commitment to democratic governance, elections in 2026 without Hamas, and the demilitarisation of the future Palestinian state.

The announcement follows similar recognitions by Ireland, Spain, Norway, and a conditional pledge from the UK.

Carney also condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and recent calls by its parliament to annex the West Bank. He stressed that Canada will step up support for democratic institutions in Palestine.
