Eight passengers, including a driver, were killed on Saturday when their vehicle hit a landmine along the Maiduguri–Damboa highway in Borno State.
The explosion occurred at Gidan Kaiji, about 30km from Damboa, and is suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram insurgents. Several others were injured and taken to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.
The District Head of Damboa, Lawan Maina, confirmed the incident and urged the federal government and security agencies to intensify efforts in securing the area.
Governor Babagana Zulum, who had recently raised concerns over rising attacks, visited the victims in hospital and ordered free treatment for the injured.
