Bills to Create Four New States Pass Second Reading

The House of Representatives has passed four bills seeking the creation of new states in Nigeria through second reading.

The proposed states are:

  • Oke-Ogun, Ijebu, and Ife-Ijesa (HB. 1098) – Sponsored by Rep. Oluwole Oke.
  • Tiga State from Kano (HB. 1308) – Sponsored by Rep. Ghali Mustapha Tijani.
  • Orlu State in the South East (HB. 1430) – Sponsored by Rep. Ikweagwuonu Ugochinyere.
  • Etiti State in the South East (HB. 1998) – Sponsored by Rep. George Ibezimako Ozodinobi.

The bills were presented at plenary on Wednesday by House Leader Rep. Julius Ihonvbere and seconded by Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu conducted a voice vote before referring them to the Committee on Constitution Review.

The House also passed 38 other bills seeking constitutional amendments.
