Bill Seeks to Stop Civil Servants Using Private Services

The House of Representatives is considering a bill that would stop public and civil servants, along with their families, from using private schools and hospitals.

Titled “A Bill to Prohibit Public and Civil Servants from Patronising Private Schools and Health Care Services,” the proposal is aimed at restoring public trust in Nigeria’s government institutions.

Sponsor of the bill, Hon. Amobi Ogah, said the trend of officials relying on private and foreign services is weakening public education and healthcare. He pointed out that over $29 billion was spent on medical tourism under the Buhari administration alone, while Nigerians paid more than $218 million for foreign education last year.

Ogah argued that forcing public servants to use government-run facilities would not only reduce capital flight but also improve the quality of local services. He urged Nigerians to support the bill for the sake of national development.
