The Benue State Police Command has arrested Dr. Ichor Tersagh Smart, a lecturer at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), over his alleged involvement in the abduction of Mrs. Susan Anyagh, wife of the university’s ASUU chairman.
State police spokesperson SP Catherine Anene confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday. According to Anene, Mrs. Anyagh was kidnapped on December 7, 2024, along Otukpo Road after stopping to assist people who appeared to need help. The assailants seized her car, held her at gunpoint, and forced her to drive towards Wurukum.
During the ordeal, Mrs. Anyagh reported seeing Dr. Smart, her husband’s colleague, nearby and called for help. She alleged that he ignored her and walked away.
Following swift police action ordered by Commissioner of Police Steve H. Yabanet, the victim was later found unconscious along the Yandev-Ugbema road and rushed to a health clinic for treatment. She has since regained consciousness and is responding well.
Dr. Smart was subsequently arrested, and the police have launched a full investigation into the case to uncover further details and other possible suspects.
