Bayelsa Govt: Low NECO Ranking Due to Poor Registration, Not Performance

The Bayelsa State Government says the state’s low ranking in the 2024 NECO results is not due to poor student performance but low registration numbers.

Bayelsa placed 36th in the ranking released Tuesday by NECO. But in a statement, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, said only 6,961 candidates registered from the state, far fewer than others.

He explained that 5,177 of the 6,876 candidates who sat for the exam scored five credits and above, including English and Mathematics—proof, he said, of strong performance.

Dr. Emelah urged parents to support NECO registration and dismissed online criticism, saying the state is making steady progress in education under Governor Douye Diri.
