The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has confirmed an anthrax outbreak in Zamfara State, urging swift action to curb its spread.
In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry’s Director of Information, Ben Bem Goong, revealed the outbreak occurred on a farm in the state. Anthrax, a zoonotic disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, affects animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats, as well as humans, with symptoms like fever, nausea, diarrhea, and bleeding.
The ministry called on neighboring states to remain vigilant and enforce preventive measures, including vaccination in high-risk areas. Citizens were advised to report unusual illnesses in animals or humans and adhere to official guidelines.
Efforts are underway to contain the outbreak and prevent further cases.
