The Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory Administration (ARD-FCTA), has warned FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of a possible “deadliest shutdown” of hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory within 14 days if their demands remain unmet.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, ARD-FCTA President, Dr. George Ebong, commended Wike’s efforts in infrastructural development but urged equal attention to doctors’ welfare, highlighting economic hardships faced by medical professionals.

Dr. Ebong outlined several key demands, including the immediate clearance of six months’ salary arrears owed to doctors employed in 2023, the payment of the 2024 Medical Residency Training Fund, and a reduction of the bonding policy from six years to two. Other demands include implementing skipping allowances, issuing accoutrement allowances, addressing hazard allowance arrears, converting eligible members to consultants, and hiring additional healthcare workers to mitigate the severe manpower shortage.

He added, “Doctors are the human equivalent of abandoned projects. While the minister fixes infrastructure, he must also prioritize the well-being of medical professionals to prevent the collapse of the healthcare system.”

The association previously issued a 21-day ultimatum, with only 14 days remaining. Dr. Ebong emphasized the potential consequences of inaction, urging Wike to address these issues promptly to avert a crisis that could result in loss of lives.
