The house of assembly in Abia state has passed a bill to stop the payment of exorbitant pensions to former governors and their deputies, in a move, the speaker says, to significantly reduce cost of governance.
The bill titled “a Bill (H.A.B 11:) for a Law to Revoke the Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions Law No 4 of 2001 and for other Matters connected therewith” was sponsored by the majority leader, Mr Uchanna Okoro.
Speaker of the house, honourable Emmanuel Emeruwa, announced the passage of the bill after its first, second reading, consideration at the committee of the whole and its third reading during the day’s plenary on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024.
The bill is expected to receive the governor’s ascent and be effective immediately.
There had been a lot of controversies over the years concerning the outrageous life pension and other benefits due past governors and their deputies which many states in Nigeria still have on their books.
