At least 80 people lost their lives in road crashes across Ogun State between January and March 2026, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, disclosed on Friday.
The command said the figure represents a decline compared to the first quarter of 2025, when 98 fatalities were recorded.
It also noted that the number of injuries dropped from 488 in 2025 to 366 in 2026.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, made this known during the 2026 First Quarter Durbar and award recognition ceremony.
He added that the number of persons involved in crashes also decreased from 1,582 to 1,172, attributing the improvement to heightened enforcement and road safety measures in the state.
“During the review comparing the first quarters of 2025 and 2026, there was a notable improvement in road safety statistics,” Fasakin said.
“Fatalities dropped from 98 in 2025 to 80 in 2026, while injuries decreased from 488 to 366. Overall, the number of persons involved in crashes fell from 1,582 to 1,172.”
Despite the improvement, Fasakin expressed concern over a rise in traffic offences and violations, revealing that 9,661 offenders were apprehended within the first three months of the year.
“Statistics showed a surge in detected offences, increasing from 7,647 in 2025 to 11,717 in 2026, with the number of apprehended offenders rising from 6,822 to 9,661,” he said.
The sector commander emphasised the need for sustained public education to instil a stronger culture of road safety among residents.
He also highlighted key achievements under his leadership, including the construction of a standard quarter guard and the asphalting of the command’s premises, while calling for increased funding and capacity-building initiatives.
