More than 600 foreign nationals have crossed into Azerbaijan from Iran since Israel began airstrikes last Friday, according to an official in Baku.

The evacuees, from 17 countries including the US, Germany, Russia, and China, entered via the Astara border and were flown out through Baku’s airport.

Azerbaijan, which had kept its land borders shut since 2020, temporarily reopened them for the evacuation. Poland and Turkmenistan also facilitated exits for their citizens and others.

The evacuation follows deadly strikes that have killed over 220 in Iran and at least 24 in Israel since Friday.
