At least 49 people have been killed in attacks on Zike and Kimakpa villages in the Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State. The attacks, which began around 8 p.m. on Sunday, also left many others injured, with victims receiving treatment at Bingham University Teaching Hospital and Jos University Teaching Hospital.
Samuel Jugo, spokesperson for the IRIGWE Development Association, confirmed the death toll, stating that sporadic gunfire was heard throughout the night. By Monday morning, 49 bodies had been recovered, though the number of injured remains unclear.
A military source confirmed the incident, stating that while three people were initially reported dead, one more died while being transported to the hospital. Security forces have since taken control of the area.
The Plateau State Government condemned the attack, calling it an unprovoked act of violence. Information Commissioner Hon. Joyce Ramnap expressed concern over the frequent attacks, describing them as a threat to the state’s peace. The government has vowed to work with security agencies to address the situation and maintain peace in the region.
