The three Lions of England struggled badly against lowly rated Slovakia but eventually dispatched the Central European nation to book a place in the quarter finals of the ongoing EURO 2024 tournament.
Gareth Southgate’s team unexpectedly fell behind half way through the first half when Ivan Schranz’s strike put Slovakia ahead. Southgate, whose tactics and player selections have been under intense scrutiny would not get any relief until few seconds to the end of normal time when Jude Bellingham produced a stunning overhead kick to draw his side level.
The party would soon be extended as an extra time goal from captain Harry Kane ensured England would secure a place in the last 8.
Bellingham told reporters the team’s success may spur them on in the rest of the competition and described his goal as “one of the most important moments of my career so far”.
The pressure on the English team is not easing up anytime soon though as the team’s performance is still regarded to be way below expectations. The team which headed to the tournament as one of the favourites have struggled in front of goal and at the left back position.
The next challenge in the competition is against Switzerland on Saturday.
