At least 30 traders, including women, are feared dead after a boat capsized on Sunday in Kojiyo village, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The victims were heading to the weekly Goronyo market when the boat, which was reportedly overloaded with passengers, goods, and motorcycles, overturned around 1:30 p.m.
Goronyo LGA chairman, Zubairu Yari, confirmed that only four people were rescued. He said rescue efforts were ongoing but hampered by heavy water flow from the Goronyo Dam.
He blamed the tragedy on overloading and poor road access, which forces residents to rely on water transport. The chairman has now ordered that no boats should carry excess passengers.
This latest mishap adds to a series of boat accidents that have killed more than 90 people across Sokoto State in the past three years.
