A consultant gynaecologist, Dr. Amdii Ndayi, says about three in ten couples in Nigeria struggle with infertility.
Speaking at a public forum in Abuja, Dr. Ndayi explained that infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected sex. He said causes include blocked fallopian tubes, ovarian issues, uterine problems, and semen abnormalities.
He added that secondary infertility—when a partner who already has a child is unable to conceive again with a new partner—is also common.
Dr. Ndayi urged couples to seek medical advice early and highlighted the use of pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) to help prevent inherited conditions like sickle cell.
