Three people have died and more than 10,000 hectares of rice farms have been destroyed after flooding hit Mokwa LGA in Niger State.
The flood, linked to water released from the Jebba hydroelectric dam, swept through several dry-season farming communities. Many farmers had just begun harvesting when the flood struck.
“We lost everything without warning,” said Abdulrahman Wuya-Kede, a local farmer and youth leader.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the deaths, which occurred when a canoe capsized. The agency says it is still assessing the full damage.
