The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has confirmed 17 cases of variant poliovirus type 2 in 15 local government areas across eight states in 2024.
NPHCDA boss, Dr Muyi Aina, revealed this in Abuja during a media briefing. He said while Nigeria remains free of the wild polio virus, the mutated variant continues to spread.
Twelve of the cases were linked to paralysis, while five were found through environmental checks.
Dr Aina said efforts to stop the spread include retraining health workers, improving supervision, and expanding the number of supported health facilities from 8,400 to 17,600 over four years.
